Traumatic Injuries of the Pancrease

Abstract
The traumatic injuries of the pancreas occur relatively infrequentely because the pancreas-is retroperitoneal organ and protected with chest, abdominal wall and other organs, but recently pancreatic trauma is becoming more common, paralleling the increase of trauma in general.
The management of pancreatic injury is a perplexing surgical problem because of their! infrequency, difficulty in early diagnosis and the large number of associated injuries, The diagnostic aids such as. serum amylase determination, peritoneal aspiration and X-ray examination have been used with variable success and these tests were not routinely done. In pancreatic injury, the common associated organs injured were liver, spleen, stomach and kidney, colon and major vessles and small intestine in decreasing.. order of frequency.
The early diagnosis of the pancreatic injury after blunt abdominal trauma¢¥ is very difficulty and the most important factor of its prognosis and management.
If diagnosis is not made .early and the treatment delayed, mortality and morbidity rate were increased. The common complicatios of the pancreatic injury _are pancreatic fistula, pseudocyst, abscess, acute peritonitis, infection, acute pancreatitis and diabetes. -
This -report present 4 patients treated in Chonnam University Hospital between the period of Jan. 1971 and Jul. 1973. All of them were caused by blunt trauma on the abdomen.
